Pretty Rubble: One Woman's Story

 My Brushes With Celebrity
Back to Full Blog

This post inspired by Polar Bear's post where she writes,...

"I know Neil Armstrong and his son. I lived near his house in the early 80’s. Yes this is the same man that was the first to walk on the moon!"

What are YOUR brushes with celebrity?

Here's my short list:

1-3.) Robert Joffrey, Melissa Hayden and David Howard (dancing big wigs, took classes from them at conventions in the 70s)

4.) Alan Fawcett, snobby host of the 80s show, "Lips Inc" (a lip synching contest show. I tried out, didn't make it. He was at a models convention where my dance troupe and I were performing.) My boss shoved me at him and said,..."get his autograph, you were almost on his show, tell him that!" I hated doing it and he was so aloof, didn't even look at me. I wanted to say..."You've got a corny show and it isn't going to last." It didn't. Maybe sour grapes on my part, since I didn't make the show. I still have his autograph-dunno' why, it ain't worth nuffin'!

5.) Alan Hunter (MTV VJ) he was in town at a night club (1983) and he was "hosting" this MTV trivia contest and I won edging out several other kids...I deserved it, I used to watch it like 24/7!! I won with an Adam Ant question and I was absolutely his biggest fan so of course I knew his real name was/is Stuart Goddard! I won an album. Alan was nice, cordial. He said,..."What's your name?" and "Congratulations, Michele!"

6.) Elizabeth Parkinson (Star of Broadway's "Fosse" and "Movin' Out") but she's actually in the catagory of..."I KNEW HER WHEN." We took dance together as kids for many years. I knew her when she played a Gingerbread cookie in "Hansel and Gretel."

7.) Back in '83, I danced on stage with Lou Christie (he sang, "Lightening Striking Again." -circa '64) and unfortunately, I did it with my fly open the whole time. Geesh.

8.) And finally (told you it was a short list.)....Fiance and I were flying to NYC out of National (DC) back in '06 and Alan Alda walked in front of us, sat down and started reading the paper. I took my cell phone out and took a photo of the back of his head. Fiance cringed (but then he would, he's met like 50 celebs due to what he's done in his life for occupations; his dad worked for the FSU Alumni Assoc. [can you spell BURT REYNOLDS]and fiance has worked on various movie sets.) BTW: Alan Alda now looks like your grandfather...silver hair, bald spot...very tall, gangly....and extremely unapproachable!!!

Oh and did I mention, fiance and Fay Dunaway are related...they share a great grandmother...

Try and top that Michele...

I can't do it!

And now it's YOUR turn friends...tell me what celebs you've met!

****Addendum: 4/21 4:35pm....was in a group blessing fest with Pope Paul in Rome in '72...o.k., that's it...really! ****

You've read about mine on Polar's blog earlier, but here ya go!

* I was at MY HOUSE. I came home from work for lunch & he was cutting the grass across the street from me (push mower/uphill). My exhubby said it was Robert Conrad, but I told him there was no way he'd be pushing a mower in E Gadsden. I knew his mother-in-law owned the house there, but just didn't expect him to be there doing yard work. His wife, Lavelda Fann Conrad, went to school with my ex, so he knew her.

Turned out it WAS him. He was pushing the mower UPhill for exercise. Dayum those legs were solid!

I spent a bit of time with him before going back to work. He signed an autograph for me (which my ex has) that was from "the lawn mower, Robert Conrad". He laughed about me not thinking it was him. He had me come back over after work & we sat out in the yard talking about all sorts of stuff.

I didn't go right home the next night & went to see my dad. When I came home for lunch the next day he yelled to me "Where were you last night? I was all set for margaritas & you were no-where to be found!". RatzinFratzin!!! We laughed & talked some more.

He had sold their house in Malibu & were building a 10,000 sq ft house in Tahoe. I could fit my house in there several times over! He told me if I ever got out that way to let him know as I could come visit them.

* I met Courtney Cox while at a DECA state convention while I was in high school - before she did her video with Bruce Springstein's "Dancing in the Dark".

I have a friend that looks like Robert Redford with green eyes.

What was Courtney doing there exactly? And thanks for sharing your Robert Conrad story....*yum!*

"The legs, tell me about his legs again George...how strong and sexy where they George!!!"

Now get back to work Secret!!!

(Hope you are more awake today!!! Man, I remember having to go to work [as a preschool teacher] many days sick, hungover and/or desperately tired...3pm could not come soon enough!!! (I went in at 6:30am)

I love not having a boss anymore!

We were in our high school DECA class at the state convention hosted in Gatlinburg, TN. My best friend was running for President & I was one of her campaign managers. Courtney was also running, but I think it was for VP.

Bob's legs? mmmmmm Hard as steel & cut so perfectly!

Oh, I am at work. When I leave here, I gotta fly to get 2 of the kiddos & head to a softball field in the next county for Tay's game at 4:30. As soon as it's over, we gotta go to a field in our county for Lulu's game at 7:00.
Tomorrow will be 2 games too, but Lulu's is at 5:30, so I'll hafta miss Tay's. Tay's is a game I do NOT want to miss, plus it'll be a great one!

I have met several AZ governors, many state legislators, Senator Kyl and Senator McCain. Know the Mayor of Phoenix on a first name basis. Other than that - I don't hang out with many shiney people

LuLu Roman

Jay Barker (ALABAMA QB OF THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM)

Ivan Parker, Bill Gaither, Tim Riley, Anthony Burger,Jim Hamill,Joey Jones,Brian Free (and a bunch of others I can't remember right now)--These are all nationally known gospel singers.

Rick Burgess (talk show host...hard of me to think of him as famous, since I have known him since the 70's)

Saw Bear Bryant and his wife Mary getting in their car once....they waved.

Rick Bragg (local boy and former writer for the New York Times...also won the Pulitzer prize) autographed his best selling book for me.

Winston Groom (Alabama native and author of Forest Gump). He wrote a book on University of Alabama football and autographed it at a signing.

Charles Barkely (he came into Pop's one night....) LOL

Gregg Maddox, former Atlanta Brave....He and his wife were shopping in the store I managed.

Passed Burt Reynolds coming out of a lounge one day near where I work.

Richard Petty
Bobby Allison

WOW Belle...you got quite the roster there of whom Mr. Azron would call "shiny people!"

Rick Bragg did a stint for our own St. Pete. Times and as a matter of fact...one day I almost did a post about a sad story he did about a little boy named "Dirty Red". His story SO moved me that I wrote to the paper and long story short, I contacted Red's family and wrote to his mom. Kept in touch for about a year until my ex found out and due to the circumstances of the story, nixed my correspondence. When I do post about it, I'll let you know because as I always do, anytime someone inspires me with a post idea...I give them a nod and a thanks!

He was quite a writer!

Mr. Ron: Those shiny people usually end up being rather tarnished once you do get a chance to get to know them...only human...feet of clay and all that!

Hey Rubble, I agree about Rick. He is a fine writer. The book he autographed for me was his first (if I'm not mistaken) best seller, "All Over But The Shoutin'".

Your list is very impressive!!

Hi Hails! I wouldn't exactly say Alan Fawcett or Alan Hunter was an impressive member of the short list roster lol! Although I'm sure they'd beg to differ! You wanna' hear impressive, my fiance has met and worked with and for people like Burt Reynolds, Lee Majors, Timothy Dalton, Cindy Crawford, Robert Urich Joan Rivers, Anthony Zberbe..he's been on the same plane as Tim Russert and Tucker Donaldson...he used to work with the guy that wrote the screen play for the recent Superman Returns movie...the list goes on and on...

My little list is nuthin'!

Thanks for visiting!

Belle reminded me...

Jay Barker (also) & The band "Alabama" (Randy Owen, Jeff Cook, etc).

How about COUSIN CLIFF? He was a children's show host from Birmingham, AL when I was growing up. I've met him again as an adult too. He might be only known by local AL people....

Jerry Lewis (altho I can't remember which one cuz I was very young!)

Hmmm...I have been to a lot of concerts and met a lot of musicians, but only for like a second though. I always hang out back after the show and try to make friends with the bus driver or something...kinda like a groupie sans anything physical ya know.
David Byrne came through my town not long ago on his way to ATL or somewhere and was only spotted by a few people. I would have loved to have met him. Instead one night about 3 am middle of no where on my way across country a tour bus pulled into teh gas station that I was pumping gas at, and out came Limp Bizkit. But, alas, I am not a fan, don't even know one song, but they seemed nice enough!
Take Care!

I bet I can produce a shorter list of even more obscurely famous people (the only kind that will come anywhere near me).

Speaking of obscure, lets talk hockey players. My wife and I lived in Parry Sound for a year and met home town hero Bobby Orr who was drinking at the hotel with Eddy Shack. We shared a table the next year with Red Kelly who asked me to pass the salt.

Ann Murray's brother once played the bar in Powassan when we lived there. I stood in line for a snack with Natalie McMaster during a break in her show in a small town in Nova Scotia. I've shaken hands with Canadian Prime Ministers John Diefenbaker and Pierre Trudeau.

And (getting ready to name drop) as for BIG Hollywood stars, I was once waiting for an elevator at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto when the doors opened and Don Ameche stepped out(I know, you're completely stunned by that)!

Dolly Parton in Tennessee. She walked right in front of me with her bodyguards and sat down a few rows in front of me at a show.

Various sports baseball players.- Johnny Bench, Sparky Anderson, Joe Nuxhall, Kurt Browning, Ken Griffey Jr. I had VIP seats at the ballpark and was able to intermingle and talk to them. (Sparky I met when I was a kid at a luncheon because I won a fire safety contest by writing a poem)

Roxanne Qualls- Local Mayor and ran for Congress.

Local News celebrities that probably nobody knows.

Peter Frampton lives nearby but I have not seen him.

Blessid Union of Souls the lead singer lives down the street from me. I wave to him and his family all the time as I drive home from work.

I am sure there are more but I am drawing a blank.

Great Post Rubble!!

Bear Hugs,
PolarB ;)

I thought this post was cool and couldn't wait to see the comments....then I read the comments and only recognized about 3 of the "celebs" mentioned.... which either makes me dumb or all the bloggers on here don't know very many celebs!!

I sure don't know any - I'm from Canada!! haha!

well, I have rubber elbows with a few hockey players, but you won't know any of those names: Patrick Roy, Miikka Kiprusoff, Wayne Grtzky's dad etc....

are they considered celebs??

Nope, sorry, I don't know Uncle Cliff...but you reminded me of a VERY special celeb (local in the Tampa Bay area anyway)...Gayle Sierens...she's been on tv since '77 down there. Anyhoo, both my fiance and I appeared with her when we were all of 13!!! She interviewed us for what was probably some Senior class journalism project while she attended FSU in Tallahassee. Well I left in '77, moved to St. Pete and lo and behold, I turn on my tv one evening and there she is!

When my fiance and I "found each other" again in '05 I wrote to her(!) and while she didn't remember the project, she was flattered that I had remembered her all this time...here she is this local STAR! But we "knew her when".....

Thanks for sparking that memory...as I sit here, her publicity photo is staring at me and she took the time to write a special note to us on it....

Hey Raspberry!

My fiance would be envious about David Byrne...he also likes Dave Matthews (yuck, not my cup of tea.)

We were in Orlando last year and suddenly my daughter, 17, whispers..."OMG MOM, do you know who that is!!!??????"

I said, some 19 year old with bad dreads and an ugly girlfriend?

"NO, MOM!!! That's (then she mentioned some name from some emo type band or whatever...)

I said, "FASCINATING!"

(But it really wasn't,..not to me!)

But it made HER day!

(If that was indeed him...whoever him was/is)

I know who Bobby Orr was...Don Amech and Pierre T.

As a matter of fact, Don Ameche came to our neck of the woods in '83 (St. Pete., FL) for the filming of Cocoon (I wanted to try out for an extra but my schedule didn't allow for it--damn! I could met "THE GUTT",...Don and Ron Howard...shoot!

Thanks Anex. for swinging by and contributing to our Whose Who!

Oh yeah and a few authors too that I went to book signings for. Douglas Spotted Eagle was probably my fav celebrity. I have funny pictures with him and he gave me a Native American flute that I treasure. I've got all of his CD's too and he signed one of them for me.

Okay I think that's it now.

SammyJo-

What a COOL memory...and as Tad and I are about the same age (I think he has two years on me...) that was way back there! I used to be a HUGE AMC fan and I fondly remember the days when I didn't have school or the summers when I could watch it! And OMG, a few weeks ago I saw they had Jesse back again...after sooo many years!

Oh the memories your memory has sparked!

Thanks for sharing!
