Pretty Rubble: One Woman's Story

Let The Music Take You There....
Back to Full Blog

The other day I was listening to my new Herb Alpert And The Tiajuana Brass CD. Those songs just absolutely take me back to my childhood. And while I heard a lot of different styles of music growing up,(pop, folk, classical etc..) there's something about this particular band; their music --that instantly transport me to a fantastic time in my life. When I hear Herb, especially his early work, I think of my dad. I know Mothers Day is right around the corner but I just felt inspired today, to honor my father with this post.

What song(s) take you back to a sweeter, more innocent time and place?

m.

PS) Here's a photo of dad and me...October 31st, 1968...oh yeh, Halloween was over and the fun was done and dad (still fresh from a hard day of doing his Master Sargent-y things, still wearing his green Army pants...) has a "chat" with lil' Rubble/Michele about the less than stellar report card I had brought home earlier that day! ...oh well, he finished up his talk with a hug...that was my dad! And I'm sure playing in the background, on the hi-fi was...."Tiajuana Taxi" or "The Lonely Bull"!
xoxo Dad...I miss you!

Ohhh Whit, you are too sweet...my goodness...yes, that Lonely Bull song is definitely MY favorite. If I was a piece of music, that would be me, I would be it! And it fits since my forefathers were from Spain (as well as Mexico and Costa Rica.) So si and OLE!

Gracias por el medley de la cancion! (Thank you for the song medley!)

Those are so precious moments in our lives aren't they Rubble...You and your dad look so sweet...
My memories are of my mom, setting up the old drop down record player, and playing all them oldies..and dancing and singing around with me..just one of many precious moments that I have in my heart...and that I continue to pass on to my own...
Smile and have a wonderful Weekend...

We had one of those old console record players. It was FULL of 33s, 45s & 78s. We even had a RED 45 of "Shaboom". I sure wish I new what happened to them all. Daddy loved to listen to the music & dance.

SammyJo-I might have looked "sweet" but the instant the photo was being taken, I probably felt like a pup with her tail between her legs and it was most likely my first real report card (as it was October) and already, I was probably getting in trouble for talking too much and definitely my poor math skills....those started way back then and haven't improved very much I'm afraid! I's SO glad blogging doesn't have to have anything to do with MATH! I'd be a goner!

Sweet Nothin's by Brenda Lee is one song that takes me back. Each time I hear it, I am sitting at the kitchen table eating breakfast on a Saturday in the spring.

The song comes on the radio, and Mother begins to dance. I laugh. Then Daddy comes in and they are dancing together around the kitchen, while I pretend to hide my eyes.

Oh Belle..."Sweet Nothings"....what a sexy song for it's time...and Brenda...what a powerful big voice in a little tiny body...hell, she was smaller than me...I'm 5'2...I would have felt like an Amazon next to her 4'10-ness!! But MY memory of that song includes and 8 Track Tape!!!

My mom was a member of Columbia House and she'd got her 10 8 tracks for a penny and a few of them she let me choose things I wanted to "hear so I got Shaun Cassidy's first tape, "A Chorus Line" "Grease-Broadway version" "Annie" (could you tell I liked Broadway!) and ....this tape of 50s tunes since I was sooo big on nostalgia songs of the 50s and 60s! And when I got it and heard that song...my goodness, the hair stood up on my arms! (of which I had plenty! ) I loved standing in front of my mirror, with baton or brush in hand making like I WAS singing that song! Man, I'm going to have to youtube her singing it!

LOL..my mom also got a "learn to hustle" 8 track tape. We learned the "Bustop" together! Mom, I miss ya'!

Thanks for triggering such fun memories!

You said something very profound that I never realized before looking at that photo all these years Pray...you noted he was focused on me. Yes he was. He was a man of few words but because of that you really tended to LISTEN when he spoke to you and he was a good LISTENER!

I wish I had listened to him more when I was 21 and he tried to convince me to get back in college! But oh well....

I was 21...what do you expect...your parents just aren't that bright at that age! LOL

Hey Polar...remember the theme to the Dating Game...that was Herb Alpert like music...actually, the music that went along with the contestants being introduced WAS an Alpert song. Also, a few of his songs, if you heard them would be familiar-you just don't know it's him! And his instrumental "RISE" was VERY popular on Top 40 radio in like '78-'79....in the 80s or was it 90s- he could be found on Janet Jackson's album...a little song called,..."Diamonds" so he's been around a long time. In fact he was the other half of A&M records. A for Alpert.
